Types of Lighting

In this blog, we dive deeper into the different types of lighting and how to use them effectively. One of the main challenges in designing home lighting is the lack of layered lighting. Often, only a central light fixture, such as a ceiling lamp, is used, which can lead to unwanted shadows. Ideally, each space requires three types of lighting to create a balanced effect, even if it’s not always immediately noticeable. Here’s a breakdown:

Task Lighting

Task lighting is focused on illuminating specific work areas where brightness is essential, such as desks, kitchens, and reading nooks. This type of lighting must be functional and practical, ensuring tasks can be performed efficiently without disruptive glare. Examples include desk lamps, spotlights, or lights with a soft, diffuse shade that provides an even distribution of light, ideal for reading. A general guideline is that task lighting should be about twice as bright as ambient lighting.

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting is intended to create a pleasant and warm atmosphere in a room. Often, it involves indirect light that invites relaxation and coziness. This type of lighting is usually applied through table lamps, wall lamps, or ceiling lights.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is used to highlight objects, such as artworks or unique architectural features. This type of lighting is usually brighter than other light sources and adds visual depth and interest to a room. As a rule of thumb, accent lighting should be about three times brighter than ambient lighting.

Decorative Lighting

Decorative lighting plays a primarily aesthetic role. Think of distinctive fixtures and light sources, such as chandeliers, wall sconces, and designer lamps that enhance and beautify the ambiance and style of a space.

This was a brief overview of the types of lighting you can use to create a balanced atmosphere in your interior. Besides choosing the right type of lighting, it’s also important to apply each kind in the proper proportions within your space. Want to learn more? Click the button below.
